River Road residents in Jacksonville’s historic and tony San Marco neighborhood could soon gain a new estate — that of professional golfer Jim Furyk and his wife, Tabitha.
The couple bought the property in July for $1.9 million and have applied for a permit to build a $2.15 million home, whose designs show a putting green on the riverfront lawn.
City reviewers are looking at plans for a home with five bedrooms, five bathrooms and three half-bathrooms at 2600 River Road along the St. Johns River. Developer Peter Rummell is a next-door neighbor.
Tabitha Furyk said the family has lived at the Beaches but with two children attending The Bolles Middle School, she said it was easier to move to San Marco.
“We thought it might be fun to be a little closer and to enjoy the neighborhood,” she said.
Furyk said the couple thought the river and the homes were appealing. “It’s a beautiful location,” she said.
Benchmark Custom Luxury Homes is the contractor for the project, which is described as an almost 9,300-square-foot, two-story home with 1,681 square feet of unenclosed space on 1.15 acres.
Kevin Gray Design Group Inc. of Jacksonville Beach is the architect.
The former house on the site was demolished in 2012, city records show. The new construction includes an estate wall with two motorized gates.
Along with two two-car garages, three lanais and a covered balcony, the total square footage under roof is 12,510. There will be a pool and spa.
The Furyks live on the oceanfront in Ponte Vedra Beach in St. Johns County. Furyk said they plan to keep the property and perhaps return there later.
Jim Furyk is a 16-time PGA Tour champion who played at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He turned pro in 1992 and joined the PGA Tour in 1994.
The Furyks also operate The Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation in Ponte Vedra Beach. It was created in 2010 to help children and families in need.
