Publix Super Markets Inc. will open its rebuilt Moultrie Square Shopping Center store Thursday in St. Augustine.

The 48,500-square-foot store closed in November and was demolished. An almost 54,000-square-foot Publix was built in its place.

The $6 million project includes the Publix reconstruction and other improvements, said project manager Riley Skinner, vice president of Skinner Bros. Realty Co.

He said the shopping center was built in 1989 and due for a major improvement.

Jacksonville-based Skinner Bros. Realty is the developer and manager of the 75,585-square-foot center at 4255 U.S. 1 S., in south St. Augustine.

The work included a new roof on shop space, an end-cap restaurant shell with a large outdoor patio, a new entrance off of Wildwood Drive and a new drive-thru pharmacy for Publix.

HGR Construction Inc. was the contractor; Almond Engineering was the engineer; Ervin, Lovett, Miller was the architect; and Harbinger was the sign contractor.

“The historical success of Publix there made it an easy decision to replace their store at its current location,” Skinner said.

Publix said it will open the 53,785-square-foot store at 8 a.m. Thursday, after which its hours will be 7 a.m.-10 a.m. daily.

Publix said about 180 associates will work at the store, which will offer traditional departments along with the pharmacy, bakery, deli, floral and fresh seafood.

Skinner said the center is 7 percent vacant, with available space at the new 2,400-square-foot end-cap restaurant and the former temporary Publix pharmacy at 2,850 square feet.

The center is owned by a group led by members of the Skinner family.
