City notes: EarthWise Pet Supply opens in Jacksonville Beach

EarthWise Pet Supply has opened a store in the South Beach Regional Shopping Center in Jacksonville Beach.

It’s the pet store’s first location in Northeast Florida. There are more than 30 across the state, including Gainesville, Naples and Tallahassee.

The business sells all-natural pet food and products.

EarthWise also offers pet grooming and self-wash stations, which are an option for people who take their pets to the nearby beach.

Future plans include home delivery and events for rescue groups.

Suns announce 2016 field staff

It’ll be a mix of familiar and new faces on the field for the Jacksonville Suns in 2016.

Manager Dave Berg will return as the club’s manager and be rejoined by hitting coach Rich Arena, coach John Pachot and athletic trainer Cesar Roman. New to the staff will be pitching coach and Jacksonville native Storm Davis, strength and conditioning coach Robert Reichert and video assistant Keanan Lamb.

Berg in his first season as the Suns manager had five of his players called up to the big leagues and seven players were named 2015 Southern League All-Stars. He’s in his seventh season in the Miami Marlins organization, the parent team of the Suns.

OneJax to host Yuval Ron Ensemble

The OneJax Institute at the University of North Florida will present the Yuval Ron Ensemble at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the college’s Fine Arts Center on campus.

The concert is part of the institute’s “Oneness of Humanity” series and will feature Arabic, Jewish and Christian artists uniting the sacred musical traditions of Judaism, Sufism and the Christian American Church. The concert also features songs of Sufi origin from Turkey, Jewish prayers from Morocco and Yemeni, Israeli and Armenian chants.

The ensemble is led by musician and composer Ron.

Allegiant Air adds nonstop flights to three cities from Jacksonville

Allegiant Air announced Tuesday it was offering three new nonstop service flights to Memphis, Tenn., New Orleans and Richmond, Va., all cities not currently served from Jacksonville.

The new flights will operate twice weekly and expand on routes Allegiant operates at Jacksonville International Airport. One-way fares start as low as $39. Those introductory one-way fares have to be purchased today.

The expansion means the Las Vegas-based airline provides access to five markets to Jacksonville passengers after launching its first flights last year.

St. Vincent’s names chief clinical officer

Dr. Huson Gilberstadt has been named chief clinical officer of St. Vincent’s HealthCare.

He will serve alongside Tom VanOsdol, chief operating officer of clinically integrated systems of care.

Gilberstadt since October has served as chief medical officer of the acute care division and previously was a physician adviser at three St. Vincent’s hospitals.

He has roots at St. Vincent’s, too — he, his father and three sons all were born at the hospital group and grew up in Jacksonville. He graduated from Ed White High School.

Hemming Park to celebrate  150th anniversary next week

Friends of Hemming Park will celebrate the namesake park turning 150 years old from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 23.

Activities include music, acrobats, live painting, a “then and now” photo gallery and a trivia contest. Friends of Hemming Park CEO Vince Cavin will provide updates and plans about the organization.

The park was sold Jan. 23, 1866, for $10. To honor that, attendees can become a member of the Friends group for $10, down from the regular $25.

The event is free and open to the public. Children and pets welcome.

Wingstop opens at Gateway Town Center

The Gateway Town Center has a new tenant.

Casual restaurant Wingstop is opening a 1,639-square-foot store in the center. It’s the second location for the franchisee and is expected to be open by summer.

Karen Maerovitz, Terranova commercial leasing associate, in a news release said the restaurant can be an option for the more than 400,000 bus passengers who pass through.

Other tenants in the center include Publix, YouFit Health Club, Subway, Papa Johns and Hibbett Sports.

FSCJ to host digital fabrication talk Thursday

The public is invited to attend a discussion on digital fabrication at 7 p.m. Thursday hosted by Florida State College at Jacksonville.

The discussion is part of the “Virtually Solid: Digital Fabrication as Sculpture” exhibit coming for the first time to Jacksonville. The exhibit runs through Jan. 28 at the college’s South Campus.

It represents use of new technologies that will help shape artistic expression.

The talk will feature professors Michael Cottrell, Julia DeArriba-Montgomery and exhibitor Clint Burbridge.

More evening news casts for Action News

WFOX TV-30 and WJAX TV-47 expanded its news coverage Monday, simulcasting newscasts on both stations at 6 p.m.

The local news continues at 6:30 p.m. on WFOX, while the WJAX program will be the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.

News director Bob Longo said in a statement the stations were adding resources to cover the expanded newscasts to give viewers more complete coverage.

Clarity Pointe offering educational programs

Clarity Pointe Jacksonville will host two educational events this month for caregivers.

The free programs are “Planning Ahead” at 6 p.m. Thursday and “Virtual Dementia Training” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 30.

“Planning Ahead” will be presented by elder law attorney Kellen Bryant to learn about Veterans Affairs benefits and estate and tax planning.

“Virtual Dementia Training” will provide insight into what it’s like living with memory impairments.

Both will be at Clarity Pointe, 8929 R.G. Skinner Parkway.

The community provides assistance to seniors and their families. That includes having a specialized memory care “living” neighborhood.

Memorial Park Association elects officers

The Memorial Park Association held its annual meeting last week to elect officers and see a presentation on the group’s work to maintain and enhance the park.

That work led to restoration of the venue’s “Life” sculpture and surrounding fountain.

The board and officers for 2016-17 are: Agnes Danciger, president; Karen McCombs, executive vice president; Robin Patton, secretary; Matthew Cochran, treasurer; and Barbara Arnold and Patricia Houlihan, vice presidents at-large.

Newk’s opens third Jacksonville location

Newk’s Eatery debuted its third area location Monday when it opened its doors on San Jose Boulevard.

The new site follows the fast-casual brand’s November acquisition of franchise-owned locations in River City Marketplace and The Avenues mall.

The restaurant plans to open five more locations in Jacksonville and St. Augustine. It also wants to open 30 restaurants throughout the state over the next five years.

TTV Architects handle $4.5M Flagler renovation project

TTV Architects recently helped complete a $4.5 million renovation of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Operations Center.

That center relocated into an existing facility of about 35,000 square feet and has room for expansion.

Work included structural upgrades, a new main entry and landscape upgrades.
