Pier 1 Imports will close its Regency area store in late February and is selling off its home décor, gift and other items, as well as its furniture and fixtures.

Spokeswoman Melissa Simon said the company continually reviews new and existing store locations to make sure the company is operating as efficiently as possible.

“Where necessary, based on that review, we make the strategic business decision to close certain locations on a case-by-case basis,” she said in an emailed statement.

Customers on the company’s email list were notified Thursday about the closing at 9395 Atlantic Blvd. The notice said the sale was pursuant to a Duval County permit granted Monday for an out-of-business/fire sale.

The store’s contents are being sold for 20-40 percent off the original ticketed price. Pier 1 Imports sells furniture, home accents and décor, rugs, pillows, window treatments, dinner and glassware, table linens, candles, fragrances and more.

Pier 1, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, has five more stores in the area: OakLeaf Town Center, St. Johns Town Center, Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine.

“We care about our shoppers in the Jacksonville area and have enjoyed serving them over the years. We look forward to serving them at our other area locations,” Simon said.

She did not respond to questions about the number of employees at the Regency store and whether they will be offered jobs at other Pier 1 locations.

“As a matter of practice, we do everything we can to support our associates during this time of transition,” she said.

The company started in San Mateo, Calif., in 1962 selling to young baby boomers wanting beanbag chairs, love beads and incense, the company says. It established its headquarters in Fort Worth in 1966, went public in a stock offering in 1970 and now has more than 1,000 locations.

Property records show the 8,550-square-foot Regency store was built in 1987.

The closing is another retail departure in the Regency area. Hobby Lobby closed last year as it opened a new store in River City Marketplace. Bed Bath & Beyond and World Market closed their Regency stores a year ago after the holidays.
