Southeastern Grocers LLC will open its renovated Winn-Dixie store in Baymeadows on Thursday, including an expanded natural and organic selection, a coffee shop, fresh sushi counter and in-store kitchen.
From noon to 2 p.m., the first 100 people will meet chef Curtis Stone and receive a free, signed copy of his book, “Good Food, Good Life.”
Southeastern Grocers has been renovating the closed store since late 2015. The city issued a permit in November for a $3 million construction project to remodel the almost 46,000-square-foot supermarket at 10915 Baymeadows Road, just off Interstate 295.
The store is in the Point Meadows shopping center, which also is anchored by a Stein Mart department store.
Southeastern Grocers also is renovating almost 2,900 square feet of space near Winn-Dixie for a liquor store, which is accessed separately from the grocery.
Florida law requires liquor stores be separate facilities.
The company sent direct mail to neighbors announcing the opening. The piece also shows a refreshed Winn-Dixie logo.
Among the store’s new features will be the expanded selection of more than 2,600 natural and organic products featured throughout the store.
The coffee shop and roaster will be a café featuring fresh-brewed coffee roasted on-site. The sushi counter will be staffed by an in-house sushi chef.
An in-store kitchen will feature chef-inspired meal options, such as salads and pizza hot out of the oven.
The remodeling is the renaissance of a store closed for about six years in a fast-growing area of Jacksonville’s Southside.
The company hasn’t shared many details about the Baymeadows store, the first new Winn-Dixie in Jacksonville in years.
Southeastern Grocers demolished the interior of the store in October, sparking questions whether the company was designing a new prototype for its legacy Winn-Dixie banner.
Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers owns the Winn-Dixie brand, which it acquired in 2012.
The property is near residential, retail and office growth spurred in part by its proximity to St. Johns Town Center.
IKEA has announced it will open at Gate Parkway and I-295, not far from Point Meadows.
