Construction is pending for Brooks Rehabilitation’s extended-stay housing for patients and their families who are visiting the Southside health care center.
Fickling Construction Inc. is the contractor for the two-story, 40-suite center at a construction cost of almost $5.5 million.
A permit application and plans show the 27,000-square-foot project, at 6207 Beach Blvd., is designed to encourage families to interact.
The first floor features 16 suites, a large kitchen and dining center, two sitting areas, a den, a business center and a laundry facility.
The second floor, with 24 suites, includes two sitting areas, a laundry area and a workout center.
Pond & Co. is the architect.
Brooks Rehabilitation said in March that construction should take about seven months.
Brooks said the housing would be available for a maximum 30-day stay.
The lodging fee will be on a sliding scale based on a family’s ability to pay.
The site is across Beach Boulevard from the Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital at 3599 University Blvd. S.
Brooks said 22 percent of its patients come from outside the Jacksonville area and the majority of those have suffered from a traumatic injury or illness.
