Pro bono was the theme for The Jacksonville Bar Association’s September meeting and member luncheon.

Tampa attorney Bill Schifino, president-elect of The Florida Bar, conducted a town hall-style presentation about Vision 2016, the state association’s initiative to enhance how law is practiced.

He said lack of access to legal representation is no longer an issue just for lower-income people, with more than half of those considered middle-class now priced out of the system.

Vision 2016 will serve to “identify ways the law profession can help the people of Florida,” said Schifino.

City Director of Community Affairs Charles Moreland presented to the association a proclamation from Mayor Lenny Curry recognizing Oct. 25-31 as “Celebrate Pro Bono Week” to coincide with the national observance.

The Bar association’s next meeting is Oct. 30.

It’s the “Dueling Deans” program with the deans of the University of Florida and University of Georgia law schools, part of Jacksonville’s annual Florida versus Georgia college football weekend.
