“Start here, go anywhere” — the slogan for the Jacksonville Public Library — took on new meaning Thursday with the unveiling of a new space dedicated to entrepreneurs.

Beginning Tuesday, entrepreneurs are invited to gather on the second floor of the Main Library Downtown to share ideas, network and take advantage of the business development resources offered at public libraries.

Kate Stewart, founder and president of Jacksonville Community of Entrepreneurs Inc., said the effort was inspired by One Spark, Jacksonville’s signature annual innovation event. The public library represents the best location to promote the local entrepreneurial spirit.

“With the library’s learning and education resources, it’s a natural partnership,” she said.

Library Director Barbara Gubbin said entrepreneurs play a role in the future economy and growth of Jacksonville. Making a space for them at the Main Library is a natural extension of the library’s mission.

Many resources needed by those who wish to start a business, such as research materials, databases and assistance from librarians, are available at the library at no charge.

“It’s nothing new to have entrepreneurs in the public library,” she said. “We help people become successful.”

Stewart said it’s impossible to accurately estimate how many entrepreneurs or potential entrepreneurs live in the area, but more than 1,000 people already have registered on the company’s website, jaxcoe.org.

“Jacksonville is so diverse. There are so many people with ideas,” she said.

Tables, chairs, power outlets for laptops and Wi-Fi will be available in the space from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.

“We’re looking forward to seeing where this goes from here,” said Stewart.
