TopGolf, the Dallas-based operator of multilevel golfing entertainment centers, is teeing up for a project near St. Johns Town Center.

The company wants to develop a site west of Interstate 295, between Butler Boulevard and UNF Drive. That’s just east of the Town Center.

City Council will vote on ordinance 2015-369 to rezone 15 acres owned by members of the Skinner family from one Planned Unit Development District to another.

The rezoning would permit commercial uses that would serve TopGolf. The City Council public hearing for the bill is scheduled June 23 and the Land Use and Zoning Committee public hearing will be July 21.

Plans show a 64,232-square-foot building along with 425 parking spaces.

The company has been looking at the area for at least 17 months. Spokeswoman Adrienne Browne said in January 2014 Jacksonville was being considered for a location.

Browne said each center creates 450 jobs, with 100 of those full time or full-time equivalents. She did not respond to a call or email on Wednesday.

TopGolf says it is the only entertainment center of its kind, offering competitive golfing games for all ages and skill levels.

Players hit golf balls containing computer microchips that track each shot’s accuracy and distance while also awarding points for hitting targets on the outfield.

Each facility features climate-controlled hitting bays and a food and beverage menu crafted by an executive chef.

It also offers music, games and HDTVs. It provides lessons, leagues, tournaments, children’s parties, and corporate and social events.

TopGolf operates 16 locations worldwide in six states and lists 12 more as coming soon. Jacksonville is not listed on the website. The only Florida location is in Tampa.
