Bartram Village should be up and open by September, featuring Zoës Kitchen, Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches among the six restaurants planned at the Bartram area shopping center.
Chase Bank, Roxy Nails and Great Clips also are planned at the center, said Leonard “Buzzy” Grunthal III of Grunthal & Schueth Properties Inc.
The city has approved a concurrency application for Bartram Village, a three-building, 25,425-square-foot retail center on 5.34 acres at 12710 Durbin Lake Drive.
Plans show six restaurants, three retail stores and a bank among the 10 retail units in the three buildings.
“I think it’s a great market,” Grunthal said. The location is near residential growth areas, Baptist Medical Center South, Flagler Center and other businesses and developments.
“The daytime traffic is tremendous,” he said.
Bartram Village Retail LLC is the property owner. Grunthal & Schueth Properties is the registered agent for Bartram Village Retail.
Grunthal said his group might develop another 7,000-square-foot building there.
Nothing Bundt Cakes opening on Beach
Nothing Bundt Cakes, a cake-maker in 24 states with almost 120 stores open and about a dozen more planned, is coming to Jacksonville.
Plans show a Nothing Bundt Cakes store in Hodges Pointe Plaza at 13470 Beach Blvd. The franchisee is Cake 4 Partners Inc. of Jacksonville Beach.
The store will bake and sell 8- and 10-inch bundt cakes, tiered cakes, single-serving bundtlets, bundtlet towers and bite-size bundtinis.
They also make them as special occasion cakes.
Charlie Waters, Cake 4 Partners president, said he and his partners plan to open the store in mid-March. Their ultimate plan is to open three stores in the Jacksonville market. A second is contemplated in south Mandarin. His franchise territory is Duval County.
Waters estimates the first store will employ about 16 people. It will serve the Jacksonville market and reach into northern St. Johns County, which would also be assisted by the possible south Mandarin store.
He said Nothing Bundt Cakes also can deliver daily to Jacksonville and northern St. Johns.
Waters is joined in the venture by operating partner Shellie Taylor, a former Publix baker, and Andrew Cummings and Debbie Brooks. He said their respective backgrounds in management, baking, medical sales and accounting “complement one another.”
Waters said he learned about Nothing Bundt Cakes while traveling. At dinner in an Oklahoma City hotel, he began talking with a man who was a partner in that city’s franchise.
“It intrigued me,” Waters said. He investigated and decided to buy a franchise.
“It is truly, truly the best cake you will put in your mouth,” he said.
The nothingbundtcakes.com site shows that cake flavors include chocolate turtle, lemon, pecan praline, cinnamon swirl, red velvet, chocolate chocolate chip and white white chocolate, among others. They’re also frosted.
The company was founded in Las Vegas and has headquarters there and in Addison, Texas. The site shows three Florida stores in Miami and Winter Park.
Founders Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz joined forces in 1997 to make cakes to entertain their friends and family, says the site. The cakes were a hit. The business expanded nationwide.
Restaurants on the rise
• Alewife Craft Beer Bottle Shop and Tasting Room renovations are in progress at 1035 Park St., the former site of Riverside Liquors. Alewife owners Kelly Pickard and Jamie Burket are leasing the location for a craft beer shop featuring retail craft beer sales, a tasting bar, and classes that will pair education with beer tastings. The name Alewife “is a nod of respect to the rich history behind the role of women in brewing,” according to a news release. In medieval Europe, brewing beer was a domestic affair performed by women. When extra beer was available, the women, referred to as alewives, would hang a broom above the door to let other households and passersby know that beer was for sale.
• South Kitchen and Spirits applied for concurrency review for a 250-seat restaurant at 3638 Park St., next to Orsay. Owner JPM Avondale LLC, managed by Jason Motley, proposes an 8,071-square-foot restaurant with inside and covered patio seating. It would replace a 9,606-square-foot building, with a smaller covered patio seating area. The Florida Times-Union reports that former Orsay chef Brian Siebenschuh and Motley, a restaurateur, intend to demolish the building that formerly housed Yesterdays Bar, which closed in September 2013. JPM Avondale bought the building, constructed in 1950, a year ago, property records show. It had been held by the family of longtime owner Steve Irvine, a regular, and unconventional, mayoral candidate who died in 2012.
