As of today, vehicles can fill up in Jacksonville with unleaded, diesel or compressed natural gas.

Amp Trillium LLC is holding the grand opening today of Northeast Florida’s first public access compressed natural gas refueling station.

The station is at 9711 Mining Drive off Philips Highway near Interstates 295 and 95 in the Southside Industrial Park.

The amp Trillium station has easy access for heavy-duty fleet trucks. The new CNG station will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and uses a public access card-reader system.

The station’s host is Champion Brands Inc., a beer distributor located nearby at 5571 Florida Mining Blvd. S.

The trucking company has a fueling contract with Trillium and serves as an “anchor tenant” for the site.

A second CNG fueling station by Trillium, planned at 4100 Heckscher Drive in partnership with Gate Petroleum, is in the permitting phase.

Compressed natural gas is domestic, burns cleaner and is more affordable than diesel fuel, though CNG-powered vehicles cost more.

A network of fueling centers is necessary for the fuel to become more widely adopted.

The company is a joint venture between ampCNG and Trillium CNG, which formed in 2012 to build a network of stations across the U.S. that serve the commercial trucking industry.
