Dr. Michael H. Schatzlein was named president and CEO of St. Vincent’s HealthCare and senior vice president and ministry market executive of Ascension Health, of which St. Vincent’s is a member.

A heart transplant surgeon, Schatzlein was president and CEO of Saint Thomas Health in Nashville from June 2010 until last month. He will begin his duties in Jacksonville after Labor Day.

“Mike is the right person to lead St. Vincent’s HealthCare as our national health ministry works in a more integrated way to transform healthcare,” said Dr. Patricia Maryland, president of Healthcare Operations and chief operating officer of Ascension Health, in a news release Thursday.

Ascension is the largest not-for-profit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system with a network of 100 general acute care hospitals.

Schatzlein cited as reasons for his decision to lead St. Vincent’s the ministry’s “great reputation, committed board and donors and associates who are capable and caring.”

He and his wife Liz, a broadcast journalist, live in Nashville and will also establish a residence in Jacksonville.

Donny Romine, interim CEO of St. Vincent’s, will return to his role as chief operating officer.

Romine has been interim CEO since Moody Chisholm left in March to take a job with Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City.
