The Clerk of Courts gave people the green light Saturday to come Downtown to pay less for their outstanding tickets and fines.
More than 1,200 people took advantage, with the office taking in just under $514,000.
Dubbed “Operation Green Light,” the one-day offer allowed people facing outstanding traffic tickets and criminal fines the opportunity to pay them off without the clerk’s normal 40 percent collections surcharge.
For example, a typical $252 ticket for running a red light was reduced to $157.
In all, those who paid their fines Saturday saved about $188,000, said Derek Igou, chief operations officer for the clerk’s office.
Hours were 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Duval County Courthouse. But, even when the doors closed, there were still enough people in line to keep the program going until a little after 7 p.m., Igou said.
“It exceeded my expectations,” he said. “It was a great day that helped a lot of people.”
The Tax Collector’s Office also opened its Downtown branch Saturday to issue new licenses for those who had taken care of their outstanding fines and were eligible for reinstatement. Those numbers weren’t readily available.
