Jacksonville-based Bi-Lo Holdings expects to open more than 25 new and remodeled stores by year-end, but has not announced the locations.
Spokesman Brian Wright said the company publicly has not broken down the number of new vs. remodeled stores.
He said he couldn’t comment on the timing or addresses of the new and remodeled stores for competitive reasons.
Those stores would open as 23 other stores are being closed by Nov. 19. None of the store closings are in Jacksonville.
The company said this week that the impending closures come after two years of focusing attention on the merger of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket chains and the integration of the Delhaize America stores.
The company merged 207 Bi-Lo and 480 Winn-Dixie stores and integrated 163 acquired Delhaize America stores.
“We purposely delayed what is normally an ongoing process of reviewing our network of stores,” Wright said.
Bi-Lo Holdings told associates and local community leaders Friday that it would close the 23 underperforming Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores.
The closures represent less than 3 percent of its total base of 827 stores.
The stores that will be closed are in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina, six of the eight states in which the company operates. It also has stores in Mississippi and Tennessee.
The closings are:
Alabama: Clay, Hueytown, Montgomery (2), Tallassee
Florida: Mangonia Park, Orlando (2), Riviera Beach, West Palm Beach, Wildwood
Georgia: Columbus, Elberton, Valdosta (2)
Louisiana: Baton Rouge
North Carolina: Asheville, Charlotte, Kannapolis
South Carolina: Bennettsville, Cheraw, Greenville, Taylors
