Memorial Hospital, part of Nashville-based HCA Inc., plans to open its second area free-standing emergency center in the spring at southwest Atlantic and Kernan boulevards.
Memorial said the more than 9,000-square-foot center will comprise 10 beds. Construction should start later this year.
Spokesman Adam Landau said the Memorial Emergency Center – Atlantic will be a full-service ER with a dedicated pediatrics area. He said it will be licensed by the state as an emergency department and "will operate just like an ER that is attached to a hospital."
"This is a growing part of Jacksonville," said Memorial Hospital President and CEO Jim O'Loughlin in a news release.
"The people in this area will benefit from having closer access to emergency medical care," he said.
Memorial opened its first free-standing emergency center, the Memorial Emergency Center – Julington Creek, in October.
Since then, "the Julington Creek location has seen thousands of patients and its physicians have treated everything from broken bones to heart attacks," said the release.
"Our experience in Julington Creek tells us people want emergency care close to them," O'Loughlin said.
The City is reviewing plans that show HCA Inc. as the developer for the proposed Kernan Medical Center at the Atlantic West property at southwest Atlantic and Kernan boulevards.
The clinic is shown as a single-story, 9,878-square-foot clinic on 1.7 acres. The property owner is WS Atlantic West LLC, whose managing member is Weingarten Sleiman LLC of Houston.
HCA, Healthcare Corporation of America, is based in Nashville, Tenn.
Littlejohn Engineering Associates is the project engineer. It has offices in several cities, including Nashville and Orlando.
