New Duval County Court Judge Michelle Kalil is helped with her robe by her parents, Sam and Frieda Kalil, at her investiture Thursday at the Duval County Courthouse. Kalil’s former boss, former 4th Circuit Public Defender Bill White, spoke at the ceremony. “Every new judge is going to hear a lot of praise, a lot of flattery when they first take the bench, but, as time goes on, someone will lose a motion and will want to say bad things about you, but they will learn that you are a fair, impartial and really, really good judge,” said White. Kalil was sworn in by Senior Circuit Judge Michael Weatherby, who stressed to the new judge the importance of impartiality and the pursuit of justice, and how those cannot waver in the face of public opinion. “In order to do this job properly you have to be prepared to lose it,” said Weatherby.
