The Jacksonville Landing celebrated its grand opening on June 25, 1987, and is marking its silver anniversary Thursday with drinks and snacks, live music and promotions from restaurants and other merchants.

Developed by The Rouse Co., the Landing was designed to be the destination for shoppers who wanted to find merchandise that wasn’t available just anywhere in North Florida.

The Landing opened its doors with Victoria’s Secret, The Sharper Image, B. Dalton Bookseller, Brookstone, The Gap, Hixon’s Surf Shop and G.H. Bass & Co., among others. Within a few weeks, Banana Republic opened.

The restaurant roster included L&N Seafood Grill, Annie Tiques, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Fat Tuesday’s, Fantastic Family Fried Chicken and Lubi’s.

Seven original retailers will be open during the Thursday celebration: An Apple A Day, Body Shop, Coastal Cookies, Flamers, Hana & Her Sisters Jewelers, Hooters and The Toy Factory.

In August 2003, the center became an affiliate of Sleiman Enterprises. “It’s time for a change,” declared President Toney Sleiman.

That change has involved the evolution of the Landing from a shopping center with restaurants to North Florida’s only riverfront retail and entertainment center.

It’s also the site of more than 100 community events each year, including the annual lighting of Jacksonville’s Christmas tree, the Lighted Boat Parade and the Fourth of July fireworks show.

“The Landing has seen Downtown when it was up, when it was down and now when it’s up again. We’ll always be where Downtown begins and will remain viable and relevant,” said Michael Chambliss, marketing director.

The Landing’s 25th anniversary celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The public is invited to attend. For details, visit jacksonvillelanding.com.
