New Circuit Court Judge Tyrie W. Boyer was welcomed to the Fourth Circuit bench with an investiture ceremony Thursday at the Duval County Courthouse.

Boyer joined the Duval County Court bench in 2001, and was appointed to the Circuit bench by Gov. Rick Scott in October after Circuit Judge Haldane Taylor announced his retirement. Taylor stepped down from the bench at the end of 2011.

“This is a wonderful day for me and my family, and all the people that helped make this day possible,” said Boyer, who then asked his wife Lori to stand up. “Many of you know Lori as our Council person from District 5. She is also my precious wife and I do not believe we would be here today if it were not for her. She encouraged me to apply for this position and spent long hours assisting me with my application.”

Another recently appointed judge was asked to speak on behalf of Boyer during the ceremony, Scott Makar, appointed to the First District Court of Appeal by Gov. Rick Scott. Makar is a former general counsel for the City of Jacksonville and has served as Florida Solicitor General since 2007.

“It’s a special breed of lawyer that is a trial judge, in my estimation,” said Makar. “Trial judges are out there every day solving problems. You’re asked to solve those problems and make peace time and time again. So I had to ponder why someone would go from the County to the Circuit bench. I think that answer lies in three things: this man’s character, competence and commitment to the law.”
