State Attorney Angela Corey announced Wednesday evening in Jacksonville that she has charged George Zimmerman with second-degree murder for fatally shooting 17-year-old unarmed Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26 in Sanford.
She was joined at her announcement by Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda, Sheriff John Rutherford and Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt, among others. Gov. Rick Scott appointed Corey as the special prosecutor for the case.
Corey said Zimmerman surrendered to Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials before the news conference and had contacted new counsel, Orlando lawyer Mark O’Mara.
Corey asked the public to let the legal system work. “We ask you to continue to pray for our team as well as (Martin’s parents) Tracy (Martin) and Sybrina (Fulton) and the rest of Trayvon’s family. We also ask everyone to refrain from any pre-judging this case before due diligence and due process takes its course,” she said.
