In 2011, in the wake of the Great Recession and financial crisis, the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida issued its first public opinion poll to measure attitudes toward nonprofit organizations on attributes including management, service and performance in the community.

To mark its 20th anniversary, the Nonprofit Center released its second poll in October, conducted in late August and early September by the Public Opinion Research Lab at the University of North Florida.

Based on responses from a representative sample of 1,023 people who live in Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam and St. Johns counties, the report focuses on public trust in institutions, attitudes about nonprofits and how people contribute their time, talent and treasure to nonprofit organizations.

Duval County residents comprise 52% of respondents, followed by St. Johns County at 20%, Clay County at 12%, Flagler County at 6%, Putnam County at 5%, Nassau County at 4% and Baker County at 2%.

The report states its margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 points.

Results indicate the community believes in the good that nonprofits can do. Eight in 10 people say the community would be a better place to live if more people donated or volunteered with nonprofits.

Similar proportions believe that nonprofits make the community more desirable, are a vital part of the local economy and can deliver services more efficiently than government.

More than three-quarters of respondents believe the work that nonprofits do creates a fairer, more unified community.

Majorities of those surveyed across a variety of demographic differences including age, race, gender, income and political party affiliation say they trust nonprofits.
