Why did you become a judge?

I had served as an assistant state attorney for eight years when this new County Court division was created. I felt my experience, both work and life, had prepared me for what is a great opportunity to continue public service and remain working in the environment I love, which is the courtroom.

What should every lawyer know about appearing in your court?

Please be realistic about the amount of time that you will need when setting a hearing or trial and also test your audio visual equipment in the courtroom prior to trial.

What do you know now that you didn’t when you were practicing before the bench?

Although I had heard several times how collegial and helpful the bench is in the Fourth Judicial Circuit, I did not fully appreciate it. While we may not always reach the same conclusion, there is a shared respect for one another. I am very thankful to work with my fellow judges.

Community involvement?

I am a big advocate of promoting reading in our elementary schools. I have been a guest reader every year I have been on the bench in Duval County public schools. I am also on the advisory boards of the University of North Florida Pre-Law Program and the Salvation Army.

What are your interests outside the courtroom?

My interests include being outside: running, biking, hiking, skiing; and I also enjoy reading and spending time with my family.

What was the last book you read or are reading?

I am currently reading “Bel Canto” by Ann Patchett for my book club. I usually read at least one book a month.
