Plans show Chipotle Mexican Grill intends to open in the Lakewood area by renovating a closed Whataburger restaurant at 3860 University Blvd. W.

The city is reviewing a permit application for an estimated $400,000 interior and exterior alteration of the 3,074-square-foot restaurant built in 2004.

Chipotle Mexican Grill of Colorado LLC is listed as the restaurant owner.

Tyler Benson, Chipotle external communications analyst at Newport Beach, California, headquarters, said by email April 5 the company does not have a planned location, but “we are always looking to bring our food with integrity to great new communities.”

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. operated more than 2,750 restaurants as of Dec. 31 in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.  It  operates 10 locations in the Jacksonville area.

Neptune Beach-based 3860 WUNIV LCC paid $1.15 million for the closed Whataburger in September. State corporate records show the LLC comprises Brian Platock and Al Mansur.

Platock is a retail real estate specialist and manager of Florida Retail Group LLC.

Mansur owns Al’s Pizza and other concepts.

Platock and Mansur said they could not comment about Chipotle and referred questions to the company.

They said they own the building and are negotiating with an undisclosed tenant.
