Aldi store identified at Regency site

Aldi appears to be expanding its Northeast Florida presence into the Regency area.

A site plan for CB Square at 9333 Atlantic Blvd., at northeast Atlantic and Southside boulevards, shows an Aldi grocery store next to the MattressFirm Superstore.

The plan is on the website for The Shopping Center Group, which represents the property.

Aldi is taking space formerly used by Bed Bath & Beyond.

Nancy Sumner with The Shopping Center Group LLC provided a lease outline that shows Aldi would use 20,316 square feet in that building.

"There is currently a void of grocers servicing the Regency trade area besides Wal-Mart, which is north of this trade area," she said.

Sumner said the housing density and demographics there lend themselves to a grocer, "so I think they will be very successful in this market."

A smaller strip center on the property is occupied by Panera Bread, Moe’s Southwest Grill and Starbucks Coffee.

The Regency Aldi would be the sixth location either developed or identified for the Germany-based discount food chain.

Aldi already operates at 9041 Southside Blvd. in Jacksonville and in St. Augustine and Middleburg.

It intends to build a store in Town Center Promenade near St. Johns Town Center and in West Jacksonville along Normandy Boulevard near Interstate 295 and Memorial Park Road.

Aldi also is considered a potential tenant for Oakleaf Corner in Southwest Jacksonville.

The company announced recently it plans to open 650 stores across the U.S., expecting to operate almost 2,000 locations by the end of 2018.

It also said it intends to remodel more than 1,300 of its U.S. stores by 2020 to provide a more modern design and focus on fresh items, including produce, dairy and bakery sections.

Amazon delivery station OK’d

Seattle-based Amazon.com, with two large fulfillment centers under development, now will also open a smaller delivery center in North Jacksonville.

The city approved a permit Monday for DDC LLC to build-out 63,000 square feet for the center at 11084 Cabot Commerce Center in Alta Lakes Commerce Center.

The job cost is $1.5 million.

Amazon.com is developing large fulfillment centers in Northwest and West Jacksonville.

The delivery center is 9 miles east of the fulfillment center center under development at 12900 Pecan Park Road.

Packages will be sorted generally between midnight and 6 a.m. Drivers may load 10-22 vans about 6 a.m. and the process should be completed by 10 a.m.

And  mwpvl.com, a logistics consultant, reported Amazon launched the delivery station distribution network in late 2013 to sort packages for last-mile delivery to customers in a tightly defined area.

Ernst & Young permits approved

Ernst & Young is closer to moving into Flagler Center.

The city approved two permits Monday for Hitt Contracting Inc. to renovate more than 41,000 square feet among two buildings at the Southside business park.

Permits show a total job cost of almost $3 million for the work in 12740 and 12926 Gran Bay Parkway W.

The public accounting firm announced in December it would move into the center this summer in an expansion and relocation.

It said it will lease 45,181 square feet for its relocated Downtown office functions and its new client service delivery center.

Mike Brennan, North Florida Offices managing partner for Ernst & Young LLP, said previously about 530 employees will work at the new location.

Ernst & Young will create 450 jobs and relocate 80 from the Wells Fargo Center Downtown.

Brennan said Ernst & Young has been hiring for the center and operates out of temporary leased space in Flagler Center.

The center is between Interstate 95 and Philips Highway, south of Old St. Augustine Road.

The city and state are providing $3.29 million in tax incentives approved by City Council in February for the expansion.

Ernst & Young said the new information technology and financial services jobs would pay an average of $49,340 a year.

It plans to invest $6 million in IT, equipment and real estate improvements.
