• The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” is playing Friday at midnight at the Florida Theatre and fans of the ‘70s cult classic will know that bringing props to throw is acceptable. It’ll be OK, too, Friday and these are just a few of the items you’ll be able to get into the theater: rice, water pistols, flashlights, glow sticks, noisemakers, confetti, toast (yes, toast) and others. What’s not OK? Candles, lighters and other flame-producing devices.
• Volunteer Jacksonville is no more, at least in name. The community-based volunteer organization is now called HandsOn Jacksonville and Judith Smith is the president and CEO. The organization is devoted to restoring schools, preserving the environment and alleviating poverty.
• Look for Edward Lane to take over as chair of the Jacksonville Housing Authority. Charlie Tomm is the current chair and reminded Mayor John Peyton the Housing Authority board agreed to limit its chairmanship to two years. Tomm suggested Lane could take over at the board’s Nov. 17 meeting.
• The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is hosting the Regional Domestic Security Task Force Nov. 18 at Metropolitan Park. The four-hour event will include static and interactive security displays. Sheriff John Rutherford is this year’s chair of the Law Enforcement Committee for the RDSTF Region 3.
• Speaking of JSO, back in late August motorcycle officer David Sciandra won the individual timed training and skills event at the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary Police Motor Skills Competition. The event was in Milwaukee and Sciandra beat more than 100 fellow police motorcycle officers.
• A new J-Bill has been drafted bringing the total to four for the Duval Delegation to consider before the legislative session starts in March. This bill would require that all independent agencies — the Jacksonville Port Authority, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, JTA and JEA — go before Council any time they are seeking to spend more than $10,000.
• Speaking of the Delegation, it will formally meet Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. in City Council Chambers. That’s the Monday the week of Thanksgiving. State Rep. and Delegation Chair Aaron Bean will conduct the meeting before passing the gavel to State Rep. and current Delegation Vice Chair Jennifer Carroll for the next year.
