• JTA is making changes to the Riverside Trolley. The merger of the WS1 route and the Riverside Trolley will mean expanded hours for the Trolley, which also serves Downtown. Starting Tuesday, the trolley will continue to run every 12 minutes during the lunch rush (11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) and will run every 35 minutes from 5 a.m.-7:30 p.m. The route already includes the Landing but will expand to include the FSCJ Kent campus, St. Vincent’s Medical Center and the Shoppes of Avondale. The trolley will also run every 70 minutes on Saturdays to include the Riverside Arts Market. The fare will rise to $1 from 50 cents.

• Timothy Kenney, a math teacher at Mandarin Oaks Elementary, is a state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest recognition that a K-12 math or science teacher can receive for outstanding teaching. Kenney also was a finalist in 2008. The state recipient will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and a trip for two to Washington, D.C., for a weeklong series of events.
